David Gilbertson

about the author

David Gilbertson, a passionate writer, enjoyed a long professional career in the fields of Journalism, Publishing and Business Management. Now he’s turning his attention to the vibrant landscape of fiction.

David has always had a love of storytelling and a flair for writing. He now brings both together with powerful effect in this, his debut novel, “A Fine Line”.

David’s facility with languages saw him gain a degree in English and Modern Languages from Cambridge University. It was while studying at Trinity Hall that he honed his writing skills and decided to set out on a career in business journalism. He worked as a reporter for the Reuters news agency before going on to become Editor of two leading international business publications: Metal Bulletin and Lloyd’s List.

In the second half of his career he moved on from full time writing and editing to become a business leader but he remained in the world of specialist information first as Publisher of The Lancet and then as Chief  Executive of two of the UK’s biggest business information groups: Informa plc and Emap Ltd. He now offers strategic advice to information and education businesses as a non executive director.

His diversified portfolio, in terms of his academic and business experiences, makes him distinguished as an author and his career has given him close first hand knowledge of the workings of many industries and professions. He wrote and commentated on many commercial topics and oversaw publications covering a great many fields – from the worlds of commodities, energy and shipping to medicine, humanities and the law.

Within his writing realm, David possesses a deep appreciation for both language and literature and an ability to express himself clearly and simply. His first published book, a  non fiction title called “Wine Bar Theory” is a short and accessible primer for success in business in which he makes a complex subject equally easy to understand  for both the expert and the uninitiated.

David has solidified his reputation for clarity of written expression with “A Fine Line”. In this astonishing first novel he delivers across a vast canvas of time and place a fast moving and compelling narrative, which is full of surprise at every turn. In so doing he brings to life characters who will intrigue and move every reader.

Outside his busy professional life and writing ventures, David enioys sport, especially football, and he is a passionate lifelong supporter of Liverpool FC. David is a committed European and he and his wife divide their time between London and Provence. Their two children are now young professionals: their son works in the automotive world and their daughter is a sports strategist.
